Quel vs Quelle
Quel, quelle, quels, and quelles are all the same word: the French interrogative adjective, meaning "which" or "what". The ending changes to agree with the gender and number of the noun the question is about — quel livre but quelle couleur — and all four forms are pronounced the same ("kel"), apart from a liaison z before a vowel (quels amis), so the difference mostly shows in writing.

Four spellings, one sound
The form of quel is decided by the noun it asks about, never by the person speaking. If you are not sure whether that noun is masculine or feminine, the noun gender page has the patterns.

Frame 1: quel + noun
Put the matching form of quel directly in front of the noun. Around it, the question works with any structure — intonation (casual speech), est-ce que, or inversion.
Which movie do you want to watch tonight?
— Quel matches film: masculine singular.
Which song are you listening to?
— Quelle takes -le because chanson is feminine.
Which sports do you play?
— Quels agrees with sports: masculine plural.
Frame 2: quel + être
English asks "What is your address?" with "what", but the question is really about a noun — so French uses quel, and it still agrees with that noun across est or sont.
What is your address?
— Quelle agrees with adresse even across est.
What time is it?
— A fixed phrase built on this frame: heure is feminine, so Quelle.
What are your favorite subjects?
— A plural noun brings plural sont and plural Quelles.
Quel or qu’est-ce que ?
Both translate as "what", but quel is an adjective: it needs a noun to agree with, either right after it or on the other side of être. Qu’est-ce que asks about something undefined — an action, a thing not yet named — and a full clause follows it.
There is a noun on the table, so quel:
Quel dessert tu prends ?
No noun, so qu’est-ce que:
Qu’est-ce que tu prends ?
If you catch yourself starting a question with quel and no noun anywhere in sight, switch to qu’est-ce que.

Heure is feminine, and quel agrees with the noun it asks about — even in fixed phrases.

To ask "what is + noun", French uses quel + être agreeing with the noun; qu’est-ce que must be followed by a clause with a verb.

Horaires is masculine plural, so quel needs the masculine form plus the plural -s: quels.

Only the agreement: quel goes with a masculine singular noun (quel livre) and quelle with a feminine singular noun (quelle couleur). They are the same word, mean the same thing, and are pronounced exactly the same.

Yes — all four are pronounced "kel". Before a vowel, the plural forms add a liaison z sound: quels amis sounds like "kelz-ami". In speech the agreement is mostly invisible; in writing it is required.
When should I use quel instead of qu’est-ce que?
